Everything you need to know about U Value Calculations…
What are U-Values?
A U-value, also known as thermal transmittance, measures the overall rate of heat transfer through a specific section of construction. It quantifies how well or poorly a building component conducts heat from the inside to the outside. The lower the U-value, the better the component insulates against heat flow. For instance, a well-insulated wall will have a lower U-value, meaning it retains heat more effectively. U-values are expressed in watts per square meter per degree Kelvin (W/m²K)
Why are U-values needed:
Building Regulations: All newly constructed buildings must meet specific U-value targets for floors, walls, roofs, and windows. Failure to achieve these targets can prevent a building from complying with legal requirements.
Energy Efficiency: U-values help set clear standards for insulation. By calculating U-values, we can assess how well different materials or thicknesses impact a construction’s overall thermal performance. This is essential for delivering energy-efficient buildings.
EPC (Energy Performance Certificate): U-value calculations are necessary for floors, walls, and roofs. Providing evidence of U-values is a prerequisite before preparing a SAP assessment and lodging an EPC for a dwelling .
To meet current building regulations it is necessary for constructed building to meet or better the values set out by Part L. Without them, building control cannot sign off the development and the property cannot be let or marketed for sale.
U-value report timescale:
We use the most up to date software for u-value calculations. We can verify the U-value of traditional and bespoke constructions on your project. For an experienced company like Construction-AS, the time scales usually fall into the following categories:
U-Value Report [small to medium scale project] – Around 1 – 5 days.
U-Value Report [Large scale project] – Around 2 – 10 days.
Faster service times can be provided subject to availability.
U-Value calculations
With over a decade of experience our assessors have a wealth of energy performance knowledge that can be applied to your project. Not only are we able to complete your U-value calculations quickly and efficiently, but working with us also has the following benefits:
We provide you with fixed prices and no hidden extras
You get a dedicated assessor with expert knowledge
To make everything as simple as possible, you can book over the phone
We save you money by reducing delays
Our U-Value assessors can help you and your designer or architect shape the energy profile of a new dwelling – minimising its energy use and carbon emissions. We are experts in construction types, heating systems and technologies and can help you make informed choices to achieve compliance.
The U-value calculation Process
Before we begin calculations, we start by asking you a few key questions about the proposed constructions and asking you to provide us with information about your project. With an accurate set of detailed information provided, we can get your u-values calculated. You should expect to receive your calculations within the times quoted. Occasionally, the challenges of your project are especially demanding, in which case we will contact you directly to advise you when you should expect your report.
When do I need u-value calculations
To offer most value to your project we advise engaging us for u-value calculations as early as practically possible. That way can help you make informed choices to achieve compliance. We are often instructed for pre construction calculations during RIBA stage 2-4 prior to a building control application being made.
What do you get
Once you provide us with detailed information on your project we will prepare and provide you with:
Calculated u-values of proposed construction
What happens if my u-values do not pass?
If your u-values indicate that your dwelling’s emission rate doesn’t meet compliance standards, don’t worry! Our assessors are ready to offer practical advice and guidance. They can help you make necessary adjustments to improve your build’s energy efficiency and optimise thermal elements,.
How Much do u-value calculations Cost?
Single element calculation start at £50
Multiple element package start at £150
